Life after slides
4
Transitioning from slides to digital
  • Why move towards digital?
    • Kodak does not make slide projectors anymore
    • “Digital imaging is the new imaging standard” – CAA News Sept 2004
    • Digital files can be re-purposed for many uses
    • Increased requests for digital files
  • Issues moving towards digital
    • Lecturer needs to learn how to troubleshoot technical problems
    • Digital images, like slides, need to be organized and maintained
    • Digital archives cost money to re-purpose, maintain and preserve

5
Planning a digital project
  • What do you want to use your digital images for?
  • What to scan?
  • What type of data needs to be tracked and retrieved?
  • Who’s going to do the work?

6
What is the purpose for the digital project?
  • What do you want to use your digital images for?
  • Identification purposes (internal)
  • Web access (share and promote)
  • Print (flyers, brochures, publications, etc.)
  • Archive (working or long-term)

7
What to scan?
  • Identifying your source materials:
    • Existing digital images
    • Slides
    • Transparencies
    • Prints
    • Original artwork
  • Identify condition, prioritize what to scan, approvals needed, etc.

8
What type of data to track and retrieve?
  • Data about the image
    • Imbedded with the file (scanner type, file format, color info, etc.)
  • Descriptive data about the object scanned
    • Unique identifying number (accession # / inventory #)
    • Basic tombstone information
    • Credit-line
    • Licensing issues (if known)
  • Database to store this information
    • For identifying, searching and reporting

9
Who is going to do the work?
  • In-house and/or outside resources to:
    • Manage the project budget, timeframe, workflow, etc.
    • Prepare and transport work for scanning
    • Create the digital image (in-house or outside vendors)
    • Process the image file, maintain scanning log, etc.
    • Catalogue descriptive data about the object
    • Manage supporting technologies (tech person)

10
Standards – File formats and approximate sizes
11
Standards – Storage methods
  • Most common storage choices for images:
        • CDs
        • DVDs
        • Online server

  • A data migration plan is critical to ensure long-term storage of your images

12
Digital trends
  • No storage method is dependable – migration is key
  • Archivist and IT roles are overlapping
  • Content management and Digital asset management is converging
  • Image capture should always be digital
